Prof. DI Dr. techn. Ille Gebeshuber (Austria) is a physicist from the Institute of Applied Physics, Vienna University of Technology, Austria, Europe. She is expert in biomimetics, tribology and nanotechnology. Her specific focus is the development of sustainable green technologies that are beneficial for all life - an attempt that is quite contrary to the "smaller, faster, cheaper" approach that most developments in technology thrive for. From 2009 until 2015 she was living and working as Full Professor at the National University in tropical Malaysia, where she conducted extensive rainforest expeditions with colleagues and students, learning from living nature for novel, potentially disruptive approaches to engineering. She is especially interested in biomineralization (the exquisite way in which various organisms build materials such as composites and crystals, at ambient conditions, with water-based chemistry, without the generation of poisonous gases, and without elevated temperature), in the principle “structure rather than material”, especially when it comes to replacing metals with benign materials, and in structural colours that function mainly based on their structure, rather than with the help of potentially toxic pigments.
